One more Cocktail story by Thodoris Anagnostou...Enjoy it!














"James Bond had his first drink of the evening at the Fouquets.It was not a solid drink.One cannot drink seriously in French Cafes.
 Out of doors on a pavement in the sun is no place for vodka or whisky or gin.
 A fine a l'eau is fairly serious,but it intoxicates without tasting very good.
 A quart de champagne or a champagne a l'orange is all right before lunch,but in the evening one quart leads to another quart and a   bottle og indifferent champagne is a bad foundation for the night.
 Pernod is possible,but it should drunk with company,and anyway Bond had never liked the stuff because it's liquorice taste reminded him of his childhood.
 No,in cafes you have to drink the least offensive of the musical comedy drinks that go with them,and Bond always had the same thing-an Americano-bitter Campari,Cinzano a large slice of lemon peel and  soda.
 For the soda he always stipulated Perrier,for in his opinion expensive soda water was the cheapest way to improve a poor drink."

This is not the first time that the famous James Bond asks for an Americano.Actually the first time that Bond is recorded asking for a drink is in "Casino Royale" and it's an Americano,while in "From Russia with Love" the Americano cocktail comes up twice.
And although i fully understand the risk involved in a disagreement with Bond,i am willing to take that risk:Americano is not a poor drink in need of improvement.It is actually a simple,refreshing and super delicious drink.
It's roots go back in 1860's and it was first served in Gaspare Campari's bar.It's original name was '' Milano-Torino'' after it's two main ingridients:Campari from Milano and sweet Vermouth from Torino.
The recipe proved to be a great sucess between tourists from the U.S.A. in the end of 1890's,so shortly it was renamed the way we know it today :The Americano.


For those not familiar with the bittersweet taste ,it may take a while to get used and appreciate that drink.For the rest,it is an obvious choice during the whole day!
In case you are experiencing a lazy afternoon and feel like adding a James Bond feeling to make it more interesting ,or you just need a great aperitif before your meal(the bitterness from Campari and the clear taste of soda bubbles ,make a great job in clearing your mouth pallet and preparing your tasting sense),here is what you got to do:
  • Add equal parts of Campari and the sweet Vermouth of your choice in a chilled glass(it could be 40ml-40ml,or any other portion you prefer)
  • Add whole ice
  • Top up with soda water,and stir just a little bit gently 
  • Add a lemon twist as garnish,or an orange slice(i prefer the lemon twist)
  • Enjoy!!!
